AbiWord это бесплатный текстовый процессор. Позиционируется разработчиками как альтернатива Microsoft Word. Подходит для выполнения базовых операций, таких как набор текста, создания писем, отчетов, заметок, базового оформления графикой и прочего. Интегрируется в окружение операционной системы, в которой работает, то есть поддерживает стандартные функции печати, копирования/вставки, импорт картинок и многое другое.

Программа имеет открытый код и может работать на платформах Linux, QNX, FreeBSD, Solaris (Страница загрузки (http://www.abisource.com/download/)).

Текстовый процессор позволяет расширять свои возможности с помощью подключаемых плагинов. AbiWord поддерживает чтение и редактирование документов MSOffice, OpenDocument, RTF, WordPerfect, HTML, а также имеет встроенный модуль проверки грамматики. Программа поддерживает работу со словарями на многих языках, в том числе и на русском.

В последнем релизе представлены следующие нововведения:

Новый визуализатор для платформ Unix на базе Pango, улучшающий поддержку тайского и арабского языков;
Кросс-платформенная интеграция Glib и libgsf;
Улучшения в панелях инструментов;
Улучшения в фильтрах для импорта/экспорта;
Улучшения в работе с командной строкой и, в частности, печать;
Улучшения в работе с буфером обмена.

Обновление до 2.6

После продолжительной паузы обновилась нестабильная версия маленького и открытого текстового процессора AbiWord.

Данный релиз содержит огромное количество изменений и улучшений. Так расширена поддержка различных форматов файлов, улучшена интеграция в системное окружение, обновлена система поддержки дополнительных модулей, а также исправлено множество различных ошибок.

AbiWord 2.6 is a multi-platform word processor that combines state-of-the-art usability, powerful features, and excellent interoperability. Furthermore, it features a powerful framework for supporting custom extensions. AbiWord 2.6 is the most stable and capable AbiWord release ever. In addition to fixing hundreds of bugs reported by our users, it contains several exciting new features.

This release includes the following changes (and more!):

# Greatly-improved support for languages like Thai and Arabic using a new Pango based renderer (Unix platforms)
# We've included a new GNOME Office plugin that allows embedding Gnumeric charts into your documents (Unix platforms)
# Ability to open files on remote shares, ie. samba, ftp or ssh shares (Unix platforms)
# A new experimental collaboration plugin, allowing users to collaboratively work on the same document in real-time. There are currently 3 communication backends supported: an XMPP based one (only available on Unix systems, and it could use some love), a pure TCP/IP based one and one that integrates with the One Laptop Per Child Sugar interface. Please note that we consider this collaboration feature experimental, as it hasn't seen a lot of testing outside the One Laptop Per Child deployments. Also, we are not sure yet that we won't need to make slight protocol changes to accommodate some new features. This means that the current version of the plugin might not be able to communicate with future versions of the plugin. Finally, this feature is not yet available on Windows. It will be available in v2.6.1 for that platform.
# A massive amount of work on all of our popular import and export filters, most notably the OpenDocument filter
# The addition of a new experimental Office Open XML import filter
# Support for native Windows Vista menus
# Various drag & drop and clipboard handling improvements
# Allow dragging and dropping images in and out of AbiWord (Unix platforms)
# Fast image previews in the Image dialog, even for huge images (Unix platforms)
# Various toolbar improvements, most notably the improvements to make them work better on small screens (Unix platforms)
# Lots of updates to our translations
# Lots of small fixes in our GTK+ frontend, such as fixing those pesky tooltips that just wouldn't go away (Unix platforms)
# Automatic font substitution using fontconfig when a specific font is not available (Unix platforms)
# Improved support for running AbiWord in non-UI mode (sometimes also referred to as "server" mode, as offered by the AbiCommand plugin); most notably AbiWord no longer requires an X server on Unix systems in non-UI mode.
# Improved command line handling, allowing input from standard input, and output to be directed to standard output.
# Improved printing from the command line, deprecating our previously used custom postscript driver
# Improved modularisations for resource constrained devices, such as optional printing and spelling support
# For application developers we've made available an experimental AbiWord GTK+ widget; accompanying Python bindings will follow soon.
# For distributors we've improved the build system to be more standards conformant (for example, "make dist" and "make distcheck" now work)

В очередной раз обновилась стабильная версия маленького и открытого текстового реактора AbiWord.

Этот выпуск исправляет проблемы при работе с модулями для варианта под Windows, а также устраняет несколько специфических ошибок для POSIX-систем (подробнее (http://www.abisource.com/release-notes/2.6.4.phtml)).

Установил. Действительно быстр. Но...

К сожалению, необходимо констатировать два больших минуса AbiWord при работе с текстами. Во-первых, как известно, грамотность не исчерпывается одной лишь орфографией. Есть еще и пунктуация. Так вот, если Microsoft Word укажет пользователю, где надо поставить или убрать запятую, то AbiWord к этому глух и слеп. Например, такое сложное предложение (или несколько предложений), как "Я пришел когда выключили свет поэтому споткнулся о коврик в темноте может мне стоило воспользоваться фонариком", AbiWord "скушал" с преспокойным видом. Та же ситуация наблюдается и для текстов на английском языке. Другими словами, о запятых пользователю придется заботиться самостоятельно.

Во-вторых, есть большая проблема совместимости стандартной полезной программы Punto Switcher (переключатель раскладки клавиатуры) с AbiWord. Если с Microsoft Office и Internet Explorer вы можете вообще забыть о переключении раскладки с одного языка на другой, то с AbiWord придется отвыкать. Очевидно, что Punto Switcher не тестировали на совместимость с AbiWord. Хотя Punto Switcher удается перехватить нажатые клавиши и распознать необходимость переключения раскладки, все-таки эта полезная программа не в состоянии заменить уже набранный некорректный текст в редакторе AbiWord на его правильную интерпретацию в другой раскладке. И еще куча мелочей на тойже странице. И там же вывод:
В заключение хочется отметить, что AbiWord вряд ли сможет заменить редактор из состава Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, StarOffice. Но, если пользователю вдруг понадобится отредактировать документ Word или создать нормальный текстовый файл с неплохим оформлением, графикой и т.д., а под рукой не окажется "тяжелого" пакета, то AbiWord со своим размером менее 5 Мбайт (плюс плагины) вполне сможет выручить.

В целом AbiWord можно разместить между WordPad и Word. Однако по сравнению с первым он слишком мощен, а по сравнению со вторым - слишком слаб. Таким образом, если пользователю не нравится WordPad, то его можно заменить на AbiWord, хотя для полноценной работы понадобится все равно OpenOffice, Microsoft Office или StarOffice...

Поэтому деинстал, но пока-что. За проектом буду следить
